What is parent coaching?

A parenting coach is someone who:

  • Empowers you with knowledge and skills so you can parent effectively and confidently.
  • Assists you with everyday parenting problems such as tantrums, sibling rivalry, adolescent rebellion, discipline, and introduction of a new child to the family.
  • Educates you about child development from birth through adolescence.
  • Helps you locate resources for needs specific to your family such as support groups, academic resources, and specialized reading.

Who hires a parenting coach?

  • Well functioning parents who recognize that parenting is hard and believe they can improve their ability to parent successfully.
  • People who have read parenting books and attended workshops, but found that their focus on general parenting did not address the specific and unique needs of their families.
  • People who want the privacy that turning to supportive friends and family can not provide.
  • People who have had great success in parenting until their child entered a particular stage of development.
  • Parents of blended families, twins, or multiples who need support.
  • Families going through divorce who need support understanding their options in the divorce process, managing the stress of coordinating parenting with an ex spouse, thinking through parenting plans and custody agreements, and redefining roles and identity after divorce.

At Life Essentials we have coaches who are qualified to addresses areas of special concern including divorce, step families, and raising twins and multiples.

Do parent coaches focus exclusively on parenting?

No. Parent coaches also help you improve your own well-being. Areas of assistance may include, but are not limited to:

  • Balancing work, family, and other responsibilities
  • Creating time for self care and meaningful relationships.
  • Strengthening your social and support networks.
  • Redefining your identity and roles as you return to work outside the home, stop working outside the home, become a first time parent (biological or adoption), or make the transition to having additional children.

How does parent coaching work?

  • Parent coaching consists of in-person meetings, home visits, or telephone conversations that are designed to make a difference for you as a parent and your family.
  • As a client, you determine the number of coaching sessions you want per month.
  • In the initial 1-3 sessions, we conduct an assessment of your needs and goals.
  • In our work together, we will identify your parenting goals and create a clear, actionable plan to meet those goals.
  • We will teach you skills you can use to be more effective as a parent.
  • We will help you assess your progress along the way.
  • We will ask you many questions and guide you to use your own instincts and inner wisdom to make positive, tangible changes in your family’s life.
  • We will coach you to look at situations and circumstances in your family in new ways.
  • We will support you to make important changes to your thinking, behavior, and emotions.
  • Our work together is confidential.
  • We will recommend counseling services if we believe you or a member of your family would benefit from them.

Please note: Parent coaching is not psychotherapy or a substitute for the treatment of any mental illness.
